#unstructured #information #structured #content
Really this is just a form of structured content. You can manage this in a database field or as an XML document
But what about the less structured content – perhaps the last search I submitted, the web pages I viewed while on the carrier’s portal?
Also, in this ECM enlightened world that we live in, applications that modify non-structured content should be aware of metadata, check-in/out and versioning, especially applications that weigh in at over $1,500 US
Metadata powers big data, but the reason for big data is deeper analysis on unstructured content as well as structured content that we couldn’t make sense of before or didn’t have access to before such as sensor data or information from social media
The current slate of social / engagement tools are not a replacement for the more structured, content management-centric platforms we've deployed, but an enhancement to them
So, contacts, tasks, and document will be in SharePoint; while workflow and reporting will walk the lines between fat-client, client server and a browser powered by SharePoint. 2011 started with what seemed to be a series of sharp divisions between Apple and Microsoft, SharePoint and desktop, and documents and structured content. 2012 is starting with all of those worlds beginning to coalesce around the concept of information and solutions
In reality we can't build sustainable ECM platforms from rigid folder structures. Content loses its resiliency and purpose without context and the place it's stored tells a limited and self-referential story
Things might be a bit better if you choose a source file format that actually uses more structured content such as LaTeX or even Maven’t APT format, but these are tools that are much harder to put in the hands of the content producers, and that is usually not appropriate
When you look at the way modern CMS can style structured content and can dynamically assemble and reuse content, as while staying relatively simple-to-use, you really wonder why word processors can’t do the same ?
