The challenge is really a simple one that affects all organizations trying to grow or move from a more or less stringent regime of controlled vocabularies and predefined metadata to a more open and collaborative environment, including Social Tagging. This new way of working you can see in many different internet platforms like Flickr , Delicious , Diigo and many others. Of course Social Tagging implies the freedom of users to use whatever terms come most naturally when adding information to objects

And search is broken but when was it ever fixed? Tagging is the glue that organizes our information...What someone internal calls "enterprise social media" someone else client-facing might tag as "engagement collaboration

SharePoint’s tagging feature provides the ability to push beyond explicit identification of quality and importance to a more ad-hoc identification of those attributes
But let me start with the positive developments, which are many and may stick for good: It was never so simple to tag a subject and filter by it. Hash tags are just a great concept
