Business is very often based on a siloed organization and everything to everyone can easily realize this by counting the number of competing solutions (particularly with regard to archiving and content management) in production in the same company
Since the metadata used to build current applications is not going to change overnight, one would expect that a major innovation that might come from Big Data management tools would be new ways to use content analytics or system “crawling” to reveal new relationships between data existing in different information silos. There are already some conceptual tools and systems tools being used to attempt these goals
Information is leaking out of the organization at every turn. If information silos in our existing solutions weren’t bad enough, we now have our content popping up in new silos in SaaS applications that are beyond the reach of our conventional information governance frameworks
Either way we are no longer separating tasks (email) from outputs (CMS). 5) WORKFLOW -- Introduce backend systems to SharePoint: Top-of-to-do-list -- Script content types so that document properties auto-populate from the details buried in our accounting systems to our cement-encased silos (-- two complementary data stores that can't be seen talking to each other!)
Even if Sharepoint struggles in every incarnation to become a more socialable fellow on the block. Silo conversations resurrected , different platform but same social path
Done incorrectly (i.e.: in a silo’d manner), information governance may help organizations met obligations and reduce risk, but business efficiency is sacrificed

The client’s environment is rife with poor information governance and management practices: · Content duplication; · Emailing attachments instead of links; · Information silos; · Keep everything forever; · No centralized accountability for information; · Won’t mention the fustercluck that is their SharePoint environment; · No metadata standards or taxonomy; · Severely limited search capability; · No use of automation for capture, tagging, sharing, or routing of information; · A rudimentary file plan and retention schedule that is largely ignored; · Etc
Office 365 is designed to host multiple tenants securely through data isolation as each tenant is segregated through Active Directory , which isolates customers using security boundaries or silos. This is architected in a manner to help ensure that different companies that share hardware resources—that is, co-tenants—will not have their data accessed or compromised by another tenant that is not associated with that organization
They don’t want another series of mini-silos of information, another giant file share and a potential compliance and archiving nightmare
And while SharePoint isn’t the only platform that is in need of a well-defined IA, it is one, that if badly defined, can cause more information silos and frustrated employees than you can even imagine
