(At present the problem is not that significant since there are several models of scanners that support scanning of extra-long documents). What we can learn from this is that it would be very much easy and cheaper to scan a standard size document than a non-standard size
Anyone working with medium to long documents will probably agree with me on this: the currently available word processors are a long cry from being usable
It’s a comfort thing; I like to lean back and put my feet on my desk when I review long documents. Also, when I do question someone’s sanity or intelligence in a note on a document, I’m not certain that I want it recorded electronically and stored in some repository
Especially in long documents, one needs the ability to nest these with brackets and one needs a Proximity, Near or Preceding operator that provides the ability to define that certain keywords need to occur within the same sentence, paragraph or within X words of each other. This is especially important in long documents with many different sections and chapters
So it’s another trade-off but it might still be an interesting one, especially if your CMS has an easy to use content editing interface. But long document editing is still usually done offline, so for these types of workloads the usual word processing suspects will be preferred
Also there are few scanners that can scan extra long documents such as Fujitsu fi-6130 (10 feet) Kodak i 1440 (20 feet) 3
