The technology increases productivity by reducing the amount of manual intervention required with data entry and its associated costs. Recognition software can be comprised of a variety of technologies – OCR software (Optical Character Recognition), which recognizes data that is in the form of machine print; ICR software (Intelligent Character Recognition), which recognizes handwriting, including handprint and cursive writing (though definitions and capabilities vary among vendors); among other image analysis and pattern recognition technologies. To get the most out of recognition software, those implementing and involved with it at organizations need to understand how the technology works in order to set appropriate expectations. Following is an excerpt from the eBook: Understanding Recognition Technology-An Insider’s Guide , which explains the deeper aspects of how recognition software works, and includes examples, common misconceptions, best practices, and guidelines to get the most out of your implementation
Image Capture It’s a standard function without which the process isn’t complete: Can your technology’s pre-recognition software clean up and improve captured images and catch imperfections that didn’t get caught at the hardware level?
For example, if you ask recognition software to read an account number off of an ACH withdrawal permission form when the customer also gave you a check, the information on the document should be matching to what is on the check
No matter the effort placed into tuning the recognition software for the high volume (by way of number of invoices) vendors, there are limits
Enhanced for OCR goes to recognition software, enhanced for viewing to a ECM system
It’s certainly not efficient to convert digital text information to an image, push it through Optical Character Recognition software (then manually correct the inevitable errors) and save it back as digital text information
