Why can't SharePoint be more like Montage? or Netvibes? or FlipBoard?

Montage is an online app from the folks at Microsoft Fuse Labs. It reminds me of FlipBoard, which is an iPhone/iPad app that essentially turns feeds from Facebook and Twitter into a glossy magazine. Netvibes is a similar online app, but it's not as visually sexy.

Montage lets you pull in content from RSS feeds, Twitter, search results (from Bing), images, and some other sources. You can then select from many different kinds of layouts to build a visually interesting presentation of these content sources. Then you can publish and share your pages on the web.

Hopefully all that sounds familiar, because that's also the promise of SharePoint. With SharePoint, end users are supposed to be able to quickly and easily curate their own collaboration experiences with co-workers and partners. In my experience, however, end users have difficulty figuring out how to get the right content sources (if those sources exist at all) and then most people require training on how to get that content onto SharePoint web pages.

In short, apps like Montage make curating content on the web dead simple - either for your own consumption or sharing with others. SharePoint, not so much.
