Last week Document Strategy published my article, ECM or Content Services? What Is the Big Deal? It looks at why many practitioners, including myself, are not accepting Gartner’s opinion to change the term Enterprise Content Management (ECM) to Content Services. Many of us have been saying that ECM has been changing over the years, especially the concept of a single repository. Forrester has been looking at ECM in two flavors of Content Services “Business” and “Transactional” for at least two years.
The question is not if ECM is changing, every good technology will change over time. The question is should we change the term that defines this industry and if so to what. I’ll look at “to what” later this week but I thought I’d share what I’ve found that has been written about the debate since Gartner’s original post.
In Gartner’s own words,
“ECM is now dead (kaput, finite, an ex-market name), at least in how Gartner defines the market. It’s been replaced by the term Content Services”
