To Infinity and Beyond…Or, at Least “To the Cloud” for Now

At CES last week, Pathway Innovations and Technologies demonstrated their new HoverCam Office Cameras, a cloud-based mobile scanning solution that combines the functions of an office desktop scanner with a video conferencing camera and a document camera. It’s a pretty cool little device.

I mention this camera to our capture community because it shows good progress for our industry. Anything that can make headlines at CES amongst a flurry of other big technology announcements shows mass interest, and therefore progress for data capture. Gadget said that the device will allow workers to communicate more effectively and increase productivity. Ubergizmo pointed out that the small camera will enable professionals on the go to scan contracts, forms, invoices, receipts and notes, anytime and anywhere. The website also stated that “scanning on the go doesn’t require you to lug around a scanner anymore.”

I really like that statement.

Capture technologies are gradually moving towards true mobility. As I said last week, mobile and cloud are two of the key areas that are going to take the capture market to new heights; reinventing traditional OCR.  Mobile capture applications are being driven by innovations in smartphones and tablets, and the evolving “anytime, anywhere” business structure.

Morgan Stanley Research recently presented a study that showed smartphones sales will become greater than PC sales by 2012.  This rise of smartphones is bringing convenient, mobile experiences and applications to fruition. It is important that our industry recognize this growth in mobile sales, and continue to develop devices and applications that provide users with on-demand capture and mobile access.

Last year, ABBYY announced our strategy for cloud-enabled environments, because we saw opportunity in the scalability and ease of deployment that comes with cloud infrastructures. We still believe this is the case, and are excited to reveal a few new things later on this year, starting with this week’s announcement of truly cloud-based OCR and translation services.

We think it’s extremely important for organizations to begin toying with the idea of mobile and cloud technologies. Our customers have an increasing interest in incorporating data capture functionality into mobile applications to streamline workflows, improve interaction and reduce the costs. So as an industry, let’s give it to them.

To the cloud and beyond!
