Social Isn't Big In Enterprise Apps, Yet

A while back, Software Advice, an online resource for wholesale distribution software, hosted a survey to see which consumer web user interface (UI) theme readers would like to see incorporated into business applications. Ten different consumer website UIs were offered up for readers to choose from. The choices ranged from Facebook's Like button and Twitterish feeds to Google Instant Search features and AJAX-like page refreshes. A total of 148 responses before were received before the poll closed.

Surprisingly, the social media functions suggested did not rank well. Although Facebook and Twitter are wildly popular with consumers, respondents didn’t seem too concerned with incorporating these UI paradigms into their business apps. In this poll, social media garnered only 11% of the total vote.

In an time when social media is gaining steam in the business world these results are surprising. To be fair, 148 responses is by no means significant. However, it seems that social media would get more than 11% of the vote. Perhaps Facebook and Twitter functionality just didn't seem adaptable to enterprise applications?

Since this forum houses social media and enterprise 2.0 experts, I'd like to open up this topic for discussion. What do you guys think is the cause for the low turnout for social media functions?
