All businesses are based on their workflow of information and content. For the past two decades, businesses have operated the same way and with a steady flow of processes, but now with the rise of technology, our old methods are being challenged. Everything is becoming technology based and with this shift the amount of information being processed is rapidly growing, and business are struggling to properly manage all of it. With all of this data coming in, file servers are overflowing and multiplying, making it difficult for employees to find anything. Another issue, is that content is starting to pop up in new software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications, that are beyond the reach of the conventional information governance frameworks. Lastly, with the use of the cloud company data can be reached 24/7 from any computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone with internet access. Along with this consumers are expecting even more from business and applications.
All of this leads to information being leaked from the company causing employees to become overwhelmed. This is affecting employee satisfaction, organizational productivity, security, customer service, and customer satisfaction. This epidemic has earned the phrase “information chaos”, and it is affecting organizations from every industry of every size. Information chaos is changing overall enterprise content management (ECM). ECM is being transformed by the volume, velocity, and variety of the new information flooding in.
The big question is how do companies fix and adapt to these new issues? Since information chaos is still relatively new and still happening there is no definite answer yet, but here are some tips to get started:
- Understand that what users expect from applications
- Organizations must think flat and agile, not hierarchical and slow
- Focus on value creation
- Senior executives must become aware of technology and the changes
- Transform business processes
- Better engage employees and customers
- Automation to reduce the amount of manual processes in core back end activities throughout all departments.
