How Can Information Professionals Celebrate Open Education Week?

March 5-10, 2012 is Open Education Week!

What is Open Education Week? It's a celebration of free and open access to educational tools and platforms, reducing the barriers to ongoing learning.

"Open education is about sharing, reducing barriers and increasing access in education. It includes free and open access to platforms, tools and resources in education....Open education seeks to create a world in which the desire to learn is fully met by the opportunity to do so..."

Information professionals, such as those in the AIIM community, are constantly challenged to keep their skills current. It's not easy to keep on top of the constant changes, trends and shiny objects in the content management business. We're all pressured to figure out not only how to cope in a world where social content, mobile devices and cloud services disrupt IT business-as-usual, but how to connect the dots between enterprise and personal technology use. How to make everyone happy in the free-wheeling world of the web without sacrificing the governance, security and retention needs of our businesses and institutions.

AIIM has made a serious commitment to open education over the last few months. Information professionals need easy, accessible ways to stay current in the areas of content management that fall outside their core domain. Being current, keeping skills competitive, and building the vocabulary to engage with fellow information professionals across other areas of expertise: all essential for good project delivery and collaboration. Records managers need to speak the language of the web... web developers need to understand the world of digital asset management... community managers need to understand social tools and analytics...business analysts are the translators across this whole world. (Thanks fellow Expert Blogger Mark Owen for this concept.

If you haven't checked out the prep kit for the Certified Information Professional exam, I recommend you do so. Even if the exam isn't on your immediate horizon, the feedback we've received on these short, focused tutorials has been overwhelmingly positive.

Use them as company lunch & learn materials... build out a study group with colleagues or local chapter members...add them to your new hire on-boarding kit.... The potential is limitless.

Click, watch, engage... invest a few minutes a day in staying current and crossing the borders into new parts of CIP Land.
