Create Your Own Acronym: An AIIM Contest

By Bryant Duhon posted 03-19-2012 18:43

Acronyms. Create your own.

Acronyms can be useful – they create shorthand ways to convey something complex. They can create a sense of place (The HOV lane in the DC area is sounded out – H. O. V. – not “hov.” Why, who knows – BTW is stands for “High Occupancy Vehicle.”) Or just to shorten an overlong title (POTUS). They can also define and create a feeling of community – ever listen to gaming geeks describe what they’re playing or how they’ve tweaked their PCs? They can also exclude because of that same utility – in every industry there’s that shorthand that marks you as “one of us.” I know that when I listen to IT folks talk the specifics of making something work; I know I’m not one of them.

Our industry as you all know is a poster child for acronym fever. ECM. CIP. BPM. E2.0. Socbiz. Web 2.0. GARP. OASIS. Etc.

Here’s your chance to create your own acronym. Make one up, bonus points for funny. Double bonus points if it’s true AND funny. Quadruple bonus points if it’s true, funny, and includes one of the buzzwords du jour. Let’s try to keep them focused around managing information, but if you’ve got a personal one (when my 13 year old daughter is taking too long – again! – in the bathroom, we joke that it’s time to get the LED out) that’s ok too. If we get enough, maybe we’ll make a separate category.

Rules, as always, are simple.

1.      Submit as many as you would like by 8 a.m. EST Monday morning, March 26.

2.      Send them to bduhon@aiim.org with “Acronym” in the subject line.

3.      Our expert panel – OK, me – will pick a top X that will appear in the March 27 Connect at AIIM.

4.      You vote through Monday, 8 a.m. EST, April 2.

5.      Winner will be announced in April 3’s Connect at AIIM.

6.      A gift card, most likely to Starbucks, is on the line. And pride and bragging rights.

And, who knows, it might even take off. And you’ll be the proud progenitor of YAA (Yet Another Acronym.)
