Yes, it is a great concept, to be seamlessly connected to all of the information you need to accomplish your tasks, and reach your goals. The idea being you are part of a global team working from anywhere in the world through a shared workspace, and no matter what information you need, you will find it. The technology is here and we use it everyday without realizing it. Social networks let you interact and collaborate with friends, family, and colleagues. The Internet allows you to search for information, providing huge amounts for you to choose from. So what’s the big deal? Why is it so difficult in business?
Conceptually, it is not difficult, but realistically, it is complex. In business, as opposed to your social life, there are specific sets of rules by which the organization must function and to which must comply. Certain types of information must be kept secure and made available to only those who have the right to access it. Procedures are in place to ensure the end goal is achieved, consistently and accurately. Information is managed in ways that it is quickly findable, and readily accessible. There is no time to sort through 500 thousand hits that your search engine found. Oh yes, you want to be able to work with your peers in a shared space from any place on the planet. And you want to do all of this through a single interface.
In my view, we are there already, at least from a technology perspective. People, process, and systems can be connected in ways that present as seamless. Use of portals is on the rise for this specific reason. Is it easy? Not by any means. There is a lot of planning and hard work to stitch it all together. Systems of Engagement linked to Systems of Transaction that are tied to Systems of Record, and made accessible by you. Once it is done, it is just the beginning. There should be an ongoing effort to improve and expand it all to optimize and expand its use.
