Mobile Makes a Difference

I want you to take time and think about a process you have and information related to that process. Now ask these few questions.

Where does the information come from?
How does it enter your process?
When it enters the process, where does it go?
Who gets this information and why?
How does it get to this person?
Is there a way to capture this information differently?

I will now give you a scenario that I have chosen. In the news over the past weeks we have seen stories of many disasters both natural and manmade. Fires, tornadoes and shootings among the more recent I have seen. All of these have information related to them that is vital to recovery and in some cases, lifesaving situations. Imagine that you could capture this vital information in the field and transmit it directly to the people who can act upon it immediately. After the hurricane, tornado or fires, insurance adjuster can use their Smartphones to document the damage using the camera or video feature, uploading it to the claims department along with the claims information for processing. In the case of the shooting victims, photos of the wounds and even heart rates or EKG information sent directly to the Emergency Room via Smartphone. (Yes there is an app and add-on device for that.)

In my view, there is no reason not to consider mobile as a means of capture and when you look at your processes, think of them in those terms. How could you capture this information differently and perhaps earlier in the process? How could a mobile device enhance overall operations and what impact would it have on the process, organization and outcome? Mobility can make a difference and should be a consideration when assessing your operational processes. I am not saying it is the solution to capture, simply that it should and in today’s world, must be a consideration.
