We hear all sorts of discussion about Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 technologies, adoption and now the evolution to Web and Enterprise 3.0 is being discussed but what exactly is the evolutionary step to 3.0? What would/does it look like and feel like? Is it a greater level of integration capabilities to legacy systems? Is it increased SaaS and cloud offerings? Perhaps greater flexibility and tighter security through portal interfaces are in the making, but what if we took a step back and looked at this from a broader perspective.
At this stage, we are still faced with the need to access information through the use of hardware devices whether mobile or not. Could it be the evolution to Enterprise 3.0 is greater acceptance and focus on mobile devices? We see the use of alerts, agents and feeds to push information to us based on parametric search criteria but could it be the next generation will leverage artificial intelligence and neural net technologies to a greater level in that the system will predict what we need and send it to us in anticipation of our need? Extending this model, we could extend the enterprise to include remote diagnostics for our home appliances in the same way cars can now provide insight into potential problems that may require attention.
I know our focus is typically information related but is this not also information focused? It may not be content, records and structured data but it is information nonetheless, that for some businesses is relevant to customer service and what would be better than the ability to notify a customer when a problem is anticipated. So I wonder, what is the next evolutionary state for Enterprise 3.0? Growth and expanded use of Wikis, blogs and cloud computing? Will it include improved remote diagnostics and predictability? It is all possible, but what are we ready to accept?
What say you? What have you do you have a story to tell? What are your thoughts on this topic? What is on your mind? Do you have a topic of interest you would like discussed in this forum? Let me know.
