CMIS – Redefining the Content Interoperability Space

Enterprise level critical information is very often scattered across disparate content repositories. Many of these applications have been built using multiple technologies. Some of them have a nonstandard interface and presentation framework leading to interoperability challenges impacting business flexibility and leads to higher implementation costs.

Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) helps enterprise overcome these. CMIS provides enterprises with a standardized framework with a set of consistent services for executing core content and document management functions. ACMIS compliant content repository can interact with other similar content repositories, making it simple for business users to work on content stored across disparate systems.

ECM and CMIS

There are primarily three use cases of ECM related to CMIS:

  • Repository to Repository Interactions – The first use case of CMIS is Repository to Repository interaction where interaction between content repositories needs to be created for publishing content or providing records management services.
  • Federated Repository – The second use case is related to Federated Repository wherein a single application can interact with multiple repositories while presenting a single interface to the user. For instance, searching different repositories through ECM search interface etc.
  • Content Management Platform for Multiple Enterprise Applications – The third use case is where there are multiple systems like BPM/CRM/ERP present within the enterprise with each system backed by an individual content repositories. CMIS eases the interaction between these multiple repositories leading to an effective use of a shared Enterprise Content Management system, thus eliminating shuffling of content between systems.

CMIS and its inevitability

With an increase in complex structures through which enterprise content is managed, open standards like CMIS is the only way through which these challenges can be addressed.

CMIS is revolutionizing the way ECM applications manage and bring enterprise content into play. Content may now be parked at a cloud based server and can be easily accessed by another application like a CRM/ERP or by users, devices etc. CMIS has now become indispensable for most enterprises.
