Name: Jimar Garcia
Position: Founder and President

Where do you live in?

How long have you worked in information management?
I started working in Information Management in June of 2000, as a software development Intern at Kofax. Since then I’ve worked in different roles – Software Engineer, Implementation Consultant, Project Manager, Product Manager, and eventually starting the company I run today. I’ve worked mainly on the vendor side but had a couple of stints working on the end user side.
What does your work entail? Do you have company support? How are you helping drive the goals of your office through your work?
We help businesses automate their processes by refining raw, unstructured content into clean and actionable information. As a practitioner, I personally help customers develop requirements, design solutions, manage projects, and write code from time to time.
In almost all cases, because our services come with a financial commitment from the customer, with the hopes of financial upside, we get good support from the company hiring us. This is a good lesson for internal change agents – if you can apply hard-dollar benefits to your project, you are more likely to get the support you need.
What has been the biggest success in your career in information management?
Building great relationships with many people across different disciplines. In our industry, people move around to different companies but tend to stay within the industry. Having relationships helps with cross-pollination and flowering of opportunities (see what I did there?).
What’s your current biggest work challenge?
Sustaining my current business while simultaneously trying to disrupt it.
You led the Greater LA AIIM chapter as President this year, what opportunity(s) do you think AIIM local chapters offer members?
Face-to-face, person-to-person engagement, and relationship building. Yes, I understand that the Internet gives us so much reach, but there is something special about having in-person relationships. Chapters should realize that it doesn’t compete with other industry groups, it competes with Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, and other services that capture the attention of its members.
What are the top 3 things you have gotten out of being a member of AIIM?
- Relationships (I can’t talk about that enough)
- Leadership opportunity
What’s your personal goal this year regarding your involvement with AIIM or your work?
To lay the foundation of an employee training program for my business.
Popular right now on the community site, what did you do this summer?!
It was a busy Summer work-wise, but I got to visit Niagara Falls for the first time and saw Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, which was the inspiration for The Sleeping Beauty Castle’s design in Disneyland.
Thanks, Jim for all you've done for your local area! Looking forward to seeing you grow in the AIIM network!
