Today I made a new leap into a land I thought I would never tread, the land of the Mac. Yes folks, I am now using a MacBook Air and while it is taking a little bit of time and patience to learn the way Apple does things compared to Windows, I must admit the transition has not been too bad as yet. (Translation – I have not yet tried to toss it out the window.) I think part of this was the quick lesson I got at the store from the Apple representative, who gave me a few pointers on some of the differences to get me going quickly.
It is this approach of engaging the user and providing them initial insight into the tools they will be using that will also help when implementing changes in a process and introducing new technologies. They way I worked before has changed with this new machine and it can be a little frustrating when you look for something and cannot find it because you are unfamiliar with how things work now as opposed to before. This is part of change management and change management should be a part of your program plan. Communicate, educate, and lead the way through early user engagement.
In my view, there are times when a project has found unnecessary resistance that could have been avoided if only the user community had been brought in sooner and made part of the overall initiative. A demonstration here or there with regular updates is at times all that is needed to move the organization forward. I remember one project where several people commented “if only you has shown us this before,” after having gone through a painful transition where technology was pushed down upon them rather than smoothly integrated into their environment. You really can teach an old dog new tricks but it may require a new method of teaching.
If you are ready to move forward and are finding yourself stuck or unfocused and are not sure where to begin or what to do next, seek professional assistance and/or training to get you started. Be sure to investigate AIIM'sBusiness Process Management training program.
