Applying only OOTB functionality has the following advantages: Applications can be created easier and cost less to create Applications can be adapted easier, so they are more flexible from business perspective On introduction of a new SharePoint version, the applications are easier to migrate Users have a consistent and well known interface Less SharePoint specialists (which are hard to find and hard to hold) are required Applications are easier to manage
While I do agree that activity streams will take a larger piece of our mindshare over the next few years, expanded to collect data from any transactional system we connect with to show an even more accurate picture of what we do during the day (from a business perspective, mainly), allowing others to comment, rate, Like, search, and connect with those activities -- all of which will lead to even more possibilities with search and data analysis

It depends on how you define "social media" - I cut my teeth on bulletin board systems in the 1980s, was using instant messaging back when ICQ was still giving out six-digit user IDs, and started blogging in around 2002. 5
Microsoft is known for that -- from a business perspective, Microsoft's partner ecosystem is often what pushes it to the leading position in any category in which it competes

How long would you say you have been involved with social media from a business perspective?
At recent events in Madrid, Spain, and in both Berlin and Stuttgart, Germany, I discussed the topic with various SharePoint user groups, and have made slides from my presentation available online via SlideShare ( A Business Perspective on Productivity, Gamification, and SharePoint 2013 )
Let me substantiate this with a few observations: GEN-Y workforce are coming in large numbers especially into the BRICS’ emerging economies and they are bringing trends of openness and more social collaboration in the workplace The inclination is towards moving away from the work station, going mobile and being able to ideate through “crowd-sourcing” Over 50% of enterprises will use activity streams including micro blogging by the end of 2012 * 42% of workers spend time working from locations outside of the corporate firewall from home or at client locations * Thus, from both the IT and business perspectives, it makes sense to converge social collaboration with existing enterprise solutions, ensuring that the investments made in the current platforms serve the “social” needs of the younger work force and other stakeholders
