In SharePoint 2010 that point of interception is best traversed by Document Sets. Document Sets aren't that sophisticated or ground-breaking

To create a document set, first ensure that the document set content type is available on the library
Microsoft has made great strides with SharePoint 2010 to meet the mainstream needs of Enterprise Content Management customers, adding new features like Document Sets (allowing for a document “bill of materials”) and Document IDs (allowing you to track persistence of a document)
In other words, you need to know exactly what relevant data is in your document set as soon as possible
We scrambled to learn the nuances of using managed metadata, reusable workflows, numerous content types and document sets. Every one of those challenges required study and a bit of trial and error, but we managed to make everything work
You can also automatically kick off workflows, and using destination settings make documents inherit meta-data. Document Sets: True compound documents that allow you to map the document structure at scan time to other resulting multiple, multi-page documents that are saved in SharePoint
Conversely, the research shows that classifiers are better used on complete document sets, rather than on sets that will be supplemented after training
For ECM, SharePoint offers a number of features, such as document sets and content organizer, making it a reasonably comprehensive solution
