Title:
Repositioning Policy Rules as Solutions
Description
:
As we integrate new digital processes into our work-streams, we are forced to flesh out operational policies to deal with new challenges. Because these emerging problems and solutions are new to everyone, the rules you introduce are often viewed with suspicion. Even when they are required for
bona fide
technical, operational, or ethical reasons, people often resent them, suspecting that they are overkill based on fear and conservatism. That resentment shows up as complaints, resistance or outright non-compliance. The session will look at how best to present your rules so that they induce rather than hinder compliance.
Date:
Thursday, January 21, 2021
Time:
1:30 PM to 2:30 PM ET
Learning Objectives:
The wording of policy statements has an impact on compliance
Well-written policy does not micro-manage people
Policies can be worded to be responsive to unknown situations
Speaker's Bio:
Lewis S Eisen, J.D., C.I.P. is the author of the international bestseller
How to Write Rules that People Want to Follow: A Guide to Writing Respectful Policies and Directives
. He has practiced law, been a technology consultant, and been a policy writer in the Government of Canada. His approach to drafting rules that don’t sound bossy has been adopted by groups at organizations across the US, Canada, and the UK.
