  • 1.  Gender Gap closing with Remote Work?

    Posted 10-14-2020 19:40
I am seeing women being left out of meeting invites and men talking over them or not responding to them in video and audio conferencing.  I am not sure if this is occurring more often in remote working or in office.  What are you seeing?

"Without a deliberate culture shift, any increase in our ability to work from home is going to play out the same way that all workplace policies do: Women will get penalized while men use them to get promoted. We can use this unique moment to do better, but such change won't happen simply because we were forced to be remote this year. We have to work for it," according to a New York Times Opinion.

    Lorelei,
On a different note, I have been seeing these articles pop up everywhere
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/29/covid-19-crisis-could-set-women-back-decades-experts-fear
    https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inclusion/women-in-the-workplace
    https://www.ft.com/content/7e147d57-050e-405c-a334-75a5ea748e2a

Each point out career segmentation, double standards for working parents, and shifts due to remove working for moms.

I think the gender gap is widening for a few reasons, one; being the pressure women who are moms are feeling juggling kids and jobs, two; the ease for people to accidentally leave you our of convos like you describe above, and three; political climate.

It is extremely hard to work from home while kids are schooling virtually - I am very lucky to be partnering with an organization right now who gets it and works with staff to make sure virtual workloads are balanced, people are communicating as they should be, and schedules are flexible.

Thank you for sharing this article, Amy.  Yes, I have been speaking with women who are experiencing this widening gap.  The gap already existed before the pandemic.  Within the work environment, it is not just beneficial but necessary to reach to other women for ideas on how to balance work and home while working from home; and how to maintain or grow inclusivity in the work environment.
