Who met Bernadette at AIIM19?! Her energy was so contagious, we had to share it with those who might have missed her. Bernadette is the Document Control Manager at MGM Resorts Design & Development--she's also a brilliant dancer:) If you haven't connected with Bernadette before, please do so here

Name
Bernadette Dunigan
Position
Document Control Manager
Company
MGM Resorts Design & Development

Where do you live in? Henderson, NV (about 15min south of Las Vegas)

How long have you worked in information management? A little over 12years

What does your work entail? Do you have company support? How are you helping drive the goals of your office through your work? I collect & archive all construction/design/engineering project related documents for all MGM Resorts U.S. properties. The documents that I collect are used by many different business units. I believe that to be able to assist the various team within MGM I must understand their business need and how the documents that are generated by our department can assist them to complete a project. I work with various business teams outside of Design & Development to help them understand what my job function is, and they usually will have documents that I do not have. It also helps that all our documents are digital!!

What has been the biggest success in your career in information management? When I first started working at MGM pretty much all the documents were in paper format. I had the idea that if we could scan and have everything digital the cost saving in time it takes to locate the files, as well as the preservation of the drawings, was priceless. The hardest part was convincing my SVP at the time of my vision. Once I explained my vision and the benefits, he supported me 1OO%. One of the greatest feelings you can have is when your Executive team believes in you!! That is when I realize I could do this. I have never looked back and it has been a great journey. Every time I find paper drawings that we did not have, I feel like I’ve hit the mother lode!! My success is every time someone asks if I can find a specific” needle” in the haystack and I find it- that is my biggest success. I have been given the nickname” Needle” by some of my Executive team.

What’s your current biggest work challenge? Getting people to understand the documents that they generate has a definite impact somewhere down the line. It is important that you give thought to what you are producing.

What does Intelligent Information Management mean to you? Taking the data that I currently have and automating it so that anyone within MGM can find any document in 15 minutes or less. IIM is what is happening in the background. The validation/correcting of the data. It’s like when you go to a restaurant and order your favorite dish and it comes to you excellently prepared and tastes wonderful. Unknown to the diner is what steps it took to get that well prepared meal to them. IIM is all the workers paired with technology behind the scene - the better the pairing, the better the meal.

You joined us in San Diego at AIIM19—tell us more about what you brought back to your team upon your return? First, it was wonderful to be with a group that talked the same language!! I met so many wonderful people and having the opportunity to hear different ways and approaches to manage data. I also was happy to meet the various vendors (great group!) that were on hand to show that there were many examples of how to manage data. I came back with the knowledge that there are a whole group of peers out there that are facing similar challenges that I face when managing data, like getting others who may not understand what I do, but to understand that I am an expert and to gain their trust to support what I do. It helps that I let my team know that I love what I do! My enthusiasm can be contagious

We challenged everyone at AIIM19 to think about their mission. What value do you bring as an information professional to your organization? And what goals do you have as you look at the next year? I care about what I do and the people that ask for my assistance. I have learned to listen and work to find the compromise in what that is asking of me and what I can provide.  I am very passionate about documents and it shows in everything that I do. I want to be the spark for others to find what you love to do and do it!! My goals will always be centered around managing data. I do see data analytics in my future.
