Holiday Parties and ECM

For three straight days, there has been a festival of eats just outside my office. I’m not sure when this started, but a few of the good heated women in our office set up a couple of tables and everybody most people contribute something that tastes good and is generally bad for your health. A couple of people bring nuts and vegetables, but it’s the banana bread, and things made with, covered in or containing chocolate that get eaten first. At the end of each day, the perishable items are removed to the fridge, and each morning, the popular items are replenished. So why did I add ECM to the title?

Think about the parallels between the food-fest and ECM:

  1. Someone has to have the idea and the person with the idea has to actually start the process moving forward. We didn’t wake up one December with a five-day nosh-a-thon, this started years ago with a sampling of chocolate items and a bit of wine during a single afternoon. That small effort grew and grew and grew until there is enough energy and contributions to fill a week.

  2. Everybody Most people need to be involved. Sure, there might be a couple of people who only eat, but most people have been seen placing something on the tables.

  3. The best contributions are the things that some people do particularly well. The homemade breads, cookies and the chips with the hand-crafted salsa are crying to be refilled, but…

  4. The mundane and the boring are necessary and greatly appreciated. The veggie tray has had to be replenished, as have the bags of crackers and the plates of cheese cubes.

I could go on, but this post is late and you have other things to read. Besides, you get the point, it’s better when everybody most people are involved. Enjoy the holidays - see you next year!
