The SharePoint Life Balance

SharePoint is great, the people are great, and the work can be very rewarding. The combination of those three things can lead to SharePoint overload if you aren’t careful. I have noticed that SharePoint has for the past few years been trying to take over my life. There are so many conferences, outlets, social media streams, events, webinars, etc. that it is literally impossible to keep up with everything. So how does one stay on top of the constantly changing SharePoint world. The truth is that you can’t. Simply don’t try to do everything. It is perfectly okay if you don’t know how a certain aspect of SharePoint works. One of the most important things I can recommend to people is to limit your social media time to a number that works for you. Something like 30 minutes a day. For a lot of you this won’t be a problem but for others it will take some discipline. On a day to day basis there really isn’t that much that comes out and the reality is that you can take a few weeks off and get caught up fairly quickly. The other main point of concern is how big SharePoint is becoming. It encompasses so many features and capabilities that it is hard just to wrap your head around much less try and become competent in all of them. Decide on which skills you and your team should focus on and then rely on third party tools and/or consultants to fill in the gaps. Having good skills in house is important but most of us are dealing with limited budgets and time constraints. So, swallow some pride and pass it off to someone else if you can’t tackle it. You don’t have to try and be a super hero. SharePoint is there to make us more efficient and enable us to solve business problems in a timely manner. SharePoint is here for the long haul and so should you. This means proper maintenance of your mind and body. You will be a much happier and healthier person all around. Plus you will come back to work with a new perspective and energy that you can use to make your customers (no matter who they are) happier and more productive.
