Want to end a conversation quickly? When asked what you do for a living at a party, respond with, "I work with companies to implement document management solutions." That used to be my simple answer to the question. I've since shortened it to, "I sell document management software" which is still usually met with a blank stare.
Why? Because aside from the occasional industry colleague, most people have no idea what document management and/or electronic content management are.
If you had asked me 12 years ago if I would be a Document Solution Specialist I’m sure I would have thought you were crazy.
But the truth is, my job is to make companies more efficient. Which when it comes down to it, isn’t that what we’re all striving to do?
As a working mother of two young boys, I pretty much spend my entire life trying to figure out the most effective and most efficient way to do everything. There's never enough time. How do I make the most of every minute? How do I spend what time there is in "A" time with my kids? At work? How do I do "more with less" but still achieve meaningful results?
So it's only natural that I should feel right at home doing the same for my clients.
I'm not alone. We are increasingly depending on our technology tools to allow us to accomplish more. As the line between work and home blurs, we're all trying to figure out the best way to stay in the game.
That's what I do. So every day I look at each challenge and apply the same principles. What can I put in place to make your company, my company, your job, my life run more efficiently? There's rarely a quick and easy answer, but when you apply the right fix, whether its technology, a new business process or a different practice, the results are always positive.
So for cocktail conversation, I’d be better off saying I’m a saying I’m a teacher, an architect, or even an IT manager. These would be much more insightful conversation starters. But what I actually do applies to all of our lives in ways many of us don’t even know yet.
