Look for the conversations, but if you have not yet connected with Jeff, do so here

Name       Jeff Lewis
Position
Information Governance Manager
Company
SOL capital management company

Where do you live in? Frederick, MD

How long have you worked in information management? I started out working in paper archives in 2005 and in the last 13 years, I have progressed out of paper into the ECM space.

What does your work entail? Do you have company support? How are you helping drive the goals of your office through your work? My work includes strategizing information governance initiatives to support compliance, client servicing, and our administrative departments. This is primarily accomplished through requirements gathering and business process analysis to find manual or inefficient steps and then looking into where we can use technology and better business process to increase productivity. One of the things I am thankful for one is gaining the support of my C-Suite so that I can have their backing and use them as champions for many of the initiatives I propose. To drive the goals of my office my prime directive is to make my users lives easier. If I implement a solution for the end user that is my work than the current than I have failed in supporting the work they do. Everyone wants an office solution that is just as simple to use as the tablet or mobile device.

What has been the biggest success in your career in information management?

The ECM software that my firm uses is Laserfiche and this year we were recognized as a finalist for a Run Smarter award. There were hundreds of Run Smarter applicants from around the world and to be validated by an outside source that what I am designing with our ECM system is an honor and humbling.

What’s your current biggest work challenge?

Practicing what I preach in regards to knowledge management. I have hundreds of workflows and those are nowhere near as documented as well as they should be. Sometimes I get so excited about a new project that I don’t wrap things up as rich as I should before moving on. I doubt I’ll be hit by a bus anytime soon but I should really put together a hit by a bus file just in case.

How are you helping your organization modernize its toolkit to truly digitally transform? And how does this play into the overall business strategy, if at all?

Our toolkit is currently pretty modern so the next step for true digital transformation is to integrate our systems. The sun is greater than the parts so when ECM, CRM, and outlook are all speaking to each other and working together more parts of the process can be automated.

What does Intelligent Information Management mean to you as a Certified Information Professional?

Intelligent information management means that we are no longer scanning documents and managing them until they have reached the end of their lifecycle. Previously we received information, stored it and made it searchable until it met a compliant and timely demise. Now there is a value that can be derived from that information if we can get from point A to point B. Humans are no longer needed to make that connection. Intelligent Information Management means being aware of the tools that are out there to accelerate the speed of connecting those dots, whether it’s artificial intelligence, deploying robots to execute a process of using natural language processing to reduce manual labor.

Any special holiday plans for the family?

For thanksgiving, we are hosting my wife’s family which includes nine nieces and nephews between the ages of 1 and 11 so it will definitely be a lively affair.  My family lives in Indiana and this Christmas we are traveling out there to see them. My kids always get excited for Indiana Christmas trips because northern Indiana almost always has a white Christmas.
