It's challenging to get people engaging on Information Governance--but how about IG AND Sewer Systems?!

Meet John Daly--who is getting people excited about both with his expertise and energy. You may already know John from AIIM's Virtual Event on Information Governance or through his contributions in the community. But, if you haven't heard of him, we definitely want to connect you.

John's presenting at AIIM18 and agreed to meet up with us to share more of his story here. Be sure to connect with him!

Name: John Daly
Position: Information Governance Manager
Company: Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District

LinkedIn:   johndalystl

Where do you live?

My home is about 30 minutes south of the St. Louis Arch (which I can also see out my office window).

How long have you worked in information management?

Pretty much right out of grad school. My first opportunity was to look for unexploded ordnance and chemical weapons on formerly used defense sites. For some reason, they always chose me to walk point during the site investigation. This was a fantastic opportunity to learn about information management as we conducted research at every NARA region across the country. Finding a 1942 grenade range map for a no longer existing fort isn’t always the easiest thing.

What does your work entail? Do you have company support? How are you helping drive the goals of your office through your work?

What does my work entail, quite simply…culture change. It’s bringing intelligent information management (see what I did there?) to our organization.  When a business has been operating a certain way (from an information management perspective) since the 1950s, it really does take a change of culture to produce organizational effectiveness.  And you bet we have company support, as we all work together to leverage our information to better serve our employees and our customers.  In regards to helping drive our IG goals, it’s all about teamwork. Currently we’re transitioning to SharePoint 2016 and we definitely want our folks to take advantage of this wonderful collaboration tool. The IG department (not sure why I say department, it’s only me) is partnering with the IT department to provide some in-house training. And we’re also partnering with the HR department to have this course listed in our internal Learning Management System. There’s just something special about accomplish goals together.

What has been the biggest success in your career in information management?

Truthfully, I don’t think it’s happened yet. If customer feedback is any indication, it’s when I served as the Senior RIM Training Specialist at a rather large aerospace company.  Employees would often say that I made RIM interesting and showed how it brought value to the company. Another area that brought great satisfaction was serving as the Lead New Employee Orientation Facilitator for this same company. This four-hour orientation could have upwards of 100 new hires in attendance. What a tremendous privilege to get these future leaders off to a great start by instilling core values such as servant leadership, ethics, diversity, innovation, etc. I would often hear someone say as I walked down the hallway, “Hey you’re the guy who did my orientation, I just wanted to say thanks.”

What’s your current biggest work challenge?

Reducing the processes that produce paper, our goal (as much as possible) is to have our information born digitally (this ties in with our culture change initiative).

You’re speaking at AIIM18 in San Antonio, what are you sharing?

Hey I am thrilled to be speaking at AIIM. I’m hoping to have a bit of SWAG with me but in my industry what does one bring? Essentially, those attending this session will receive an unvarnished account of the perils and pitfalls, the trials and tribulations of creating positive organizational change in terms of content analytics, enterprise content management (content services), policies and procedures, technology, etc.

If you could ask any question to the AIIM audience with the hopes of solving an issue, what would that be?

The answer to this question would definitely be of great benefit to me and probably many others.

Please list three ways how, as an AIIM professional, you make information management simple and straightforward for your customers?

What are the top 3 things you have gotten out of being a member AIIM?

  • Fantastic information!
  • Fantastic collaboration!
  • Fantastic education!

As it’s now 2018, what’s one thing you’re looking forward to in the new year?

Our work days are primarily grouped in to-do’s and ta-da’s.  It seems like the to-do list always gets bigger, in 2018 my goal is to see a few ta-da’s!

But specifically I’m looking forward to the AIIM Conference!

Let’s close with a prediction, since we’ll be in San Antonio, care to share on who you think will win the NBA Championship?

Unfortunately it will not be the team that plays in our host city.

However, as a New England native, I’m going out on a limb with the Boston Celtics!
