The State of the CIP - July 2017

By Jesse Wilkins posted 07-27-2017 19:01

I wanted to share with this broader community some of what we shared with the CIPs in our first CIP-only webinar this week. We looked at four key themes: where we are with CIP, what's coming in 2017, a look at the recertification process, and what CIPs can expect at AIIM18.

1. The State of CIP. We've had more than 1,300 people pass the CIP exam since 2011. We're just shy of 700 active CIPs, in no small part because we haven't done a very good job of reminding people a) why it matters and b) when and how to renew. For the former, we have some ideas of how to improve the value and visibility of the CIP. We've started doing interviews with CIPs and are always looking for your success stories. Later this year we're going to develop justification letters that describe the value of the CIP to individuals - and to their organizations. And we've started adding the CIP CEU credits to our events pages and our email campaigns.
But we'd love your ideas as well. For the latter....

2. What's Coming in 2017. We're implementing an automated reminder process that will send out periodic emails that remind CIPs that they need to review. We hope to include the number of CEUs they've already submitted, though that might be a phase 2 sort of thing.

We're also going to put together a newsletter. Right now we're thinking quarterly, to "kick the tires" and see how it goes. The newsletter will include things like:
  • List of new and renewed CIPs
  • Articles written by, and for, CIPs
  • AIIM announcements we think would be of interest to CIPs
  • Lists of upcoming CEU-eligible events, both paid and free
  • Profiles of CIPs and their organizations
  • Updates to standards & best practices CIPs should know and be using
  • Templates, checklists, and other things CIPs can use immediately
  • And anything else you think would be of interest to the CIP community.
If you're a CIP and have an article or blog post you think would be valuable to the CIP community, send me a note at jwilkins@aiim.org.

We also have a number of public courses coming up, including CIP workshops in Amsterdam in September and in Silver Spring in November, and the CIP Prep Workshop is now also available 100% online. Technically those are more aimed at CIP candidates, rather than CIPs, but our other public courses are also worth 13-26 CEUs as well...

3. The Recert Process. We're also looking at how we can streamline that CEU reporting process to make it easier for CIPs to maintain the certification. As a longer-term project, we're going to look at converting the existing PDF form into a web form so that CIPs can self-report their CEUs as well as look up their current certification status - how many more credits are needed, etc.

4. AIIM18. Finally, we had some good discussion about some ideas we have to make the CIP experience at AIIM18 even more rewarding. Some of the things we're looking at include:
  • Developing a CIP-focused learning path. While all attendees can attend any sessions that interest them, we'll identify some sessions that we believe will be of particular interest to CIPs.
  • A CIP-only networking session. We're still working on the details here, but it will be exclusive to CIPs in good standing.
  • CIP-exclusive T-shirts! We developed several different designs, and the CIPs on the webinar voted. Every CIP who attends AIIM18 will get this T-shirt at registration:

  • And of course attending AIIM18 will be worth a fistful of CEUs. AIIM17 was worth 12.5 CEUs and attending a preconference workshop was worth another 6.5.
What else do you want to see from YOUR CIP program?
