Collaboration for all

Those of you who know me, know that I am among other things, a musician – a bassist - of over 40 years. I recently had the opportunity to record the bass tracks for a friend of mine but the catch and reason I have this in my post, is that we did not go to a studio, we did this through a collaborative effort using social sharing tools. (If you want to hear the released tune it is by The Unknown Music Man – www.tummmusic.com and the tune is This Ain’t Livin.) He put the audio file containing the guitar and vocals out in a shared service. I was provided a link to retrieve the file, donwload it and import to the recording software I use. I then recorded the bass track playing over him and provided him with the combined audio file and the separate bass track in a second file. He took this edited the combined files and sent the result for professional mastering. All of this done in 3 sessions.

While this is not the typical business collaboration, it is an example of how social media and the variety of applications today, allows people to share and collaborate on projects of all sorts. Imagine the impact that a collaborative environment using shares services and applications could have for your organization. The development of contracts, operations manuals, marketing materials and basically anything that requires interactions between individuals.

In my view, the use of collabotaive tools is limited only by the constraints of the organizations and individuals who are part of the collaborative workplace. Today, there are very few development efforts that cannot be executed via online collaboration. The time is here. The tools are here. The questions is one of the people factor.

What say you? Do you have a story to tell? What are your thoughts on this topic? Do you have a topic of interest you would like discussed in this forum? Let me know.
